GREEN ribbons have appeared across Grappenhall Heys.
Tied to tree trunks, fences, and lampposts, the ribbons on Witherwin Avenue, Lumb Brook Road, and into Wright’s Green aim to raise awareness against potential future housing on greenbelt land.
Members of Warrington Action Against Inappropriate Development organised the ‘green belt trail’ and have also set up a petition to protect the town’s greenbelt.
The group is also welcoming residents to add their own green ribbons to the trail to show their support.
The petition comes as a consultation is currently under way to comment on modifications to the council’s Warrington Local Plan. It governs how much housing should be permitted in Warrington in the next two decades. While the amount of green belt in the plan has reduced, it could still see 960 acres of green belt land released for housing - much of it in the south of the town.
Controversial plans for a huge warehouse scheme close to the M6 at Lymm on green belt land, named Six56, look likely to be scrapped by a Government inspector.
Last week former council leader Ian Marks called for that land, also in the green belt, to be protected from future development.
He said: “Local councillors and residents are determined to fight to uphold the inspectors’ initial view that this green belt land should be protected because of the harm caused by losing it.
“We will be asking our planning and legal advisors to submit more evidence to support our case.”
It is expected that a decision will be made on this by the end of the year.
