PUPILS of St Wilfrid’s Primary were a vision of patriotism last week as they dressed in royal robes and held a church service in celebration of the Coronation of King Charles III.
The Coronation service took place on Saturday, May 6, and saw King Charles III and Queen Camilla officially crowned as monarchs, and St Wilfrid’s, in Grappenhall, truly got in the spirit for the historic event.
Children were set a project to write formal invitations to parents inviting them to the service held at St Wilfrid’s Church on Thursday at 1pm as well as the garden tea party being hosted at the school after.
Parents formally responded to the invitations and pupils spent time preparing crowns, flags and bunting to decorate for the occasion.
A joint effort was made to re-create St Edward’s Crown – worn by The King during the Coronation – as well as the Sceptre and the Rod of Equity.
Through the week building up to the Coronation, the children were taught all about the Coronation and the service, the importance of the Commonwealth in relation to the royal family.
Each pupil was able to write their own letter to the King which will be sent off to Buckingham Palace.
To ensure they had enough sweet treats to feed their guests, the children made jelly and rocky road to serve up at the garden party.
All the pupils came in wearing their best royal robes and parents who attended the service, and the garden party came dressed up suitably for attending a Coronation too.
Reception teacher, Sarah Glover said: “It was amazing. The children had such a good understanding of the Coronation. They all loved it; it was a really special day.”
Praising the help they received from the St Wilfrid’s Church prior to the event, she added: “Reverend Jane Proudfoot was really helpful in planning the service at the church.”
