THE number of commuters using buses in Warrington has increased since the introduction of the £2 cap.
As a result of an additional £75million in funding being made available by the Government to Warrington's Own Buses, the £2 cap was introduced on fares.
This fare cap has been extended to the end of June, as the Government has allowed for the scheme to run further into 2023.
Now, Warrington's Own Buses have revealed that the fare cap has allowed for public transport to be more affordable for commuters, resulting in a rising number of passengers.
Indeed, the bus company has explained that the number of passengers travelling on buses in Warrington is currently higher than it is usually at this time of year, reflecting the potential impact that the fare cap has had.
Ben Wakerley, managing director at Warrington's Own Buses, said: “Our flat fare has given us an opportunity, with council and government support, to give the people of Warrington a much-needed financial boost, in a tough financial climate.
"We have already reduced bus fares, reintroduced Sunday evening routes and as we prepare plans to continue to deliver more improvements for people through more connections, keeping the cheaper fares going after the scheme ends and new buses, we want to hear from our communities on what they need too.”
The bus company has provided public transport services in Warrington for more than 120 years, and employs over 200 members of staff - most of whom live in the town.
It was recently announced by Warrington Borough Council that improvements are coming to the bus services, and a new fleet of more than 100 electric buses are due to be rolled out across Warrington.
The new electric bus depot is also due for completion soon, which will house the new all-electric fleet when it comes into service.
