A LABOUR MP has lashed out at the Government's new 'Stop the Boats' policy aimed at tackling illegal migration.
Charlotte Nichols, MP for Warrington North, has condemned the Home Secretary's latest efforts to curb illegal migration.
The 'Stop the Boats' policy will grant the Government additional powers to detain and deport those who enter the country via illegal means.
Ms Nichols has said that the policy would see anyone illegally trafficked into the country against their will would no longer qualify for protection under modern slavery legislation - something the Labour MP has described as 'a trafficker's charter.'
A document from the Government contains a statement from the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman MP, that admits the new policy would not be compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, which was partially drafted by Winston Churchill.
Taking to social media, Warrington North's MP said: "Human rights are, by definition, universal rights as once you start picking and choosing who should have any they don't exist at all.
"The UNHCR have rightly condemned this Bill, which is effectively a trafficker's charter that removes access to Modern Slavery protections from anyone who comes here "illegally" (so provided you smuggle someone in, they have no recourse to safety, I put the "illegally" in quotes as it's the trafficker who has broken the law, not their victim)."
Ms Nichols lambasted the Home Office, adding: "The Home Office needs to process claims far better and timelier than they do currently, but that issue is not solved by just determining that no one at all has a valid claim and that we have no moral or legal obligations to anyone.
"We're a better country than that, we have a proud tradition of welcoming others and providing safe harbour, and this is just gutter politics the Government should be ashamed of."
This is not the first time Ms Nichols has clashed with the Home Office regarding migration, having issued an expletive-filled rant on social media regarding the language used by the Home Secretary when referring to asylum seekers entering the UK.
