AN inquest into the death of teenager Brianna Ghey has been opened and adjourned this morning, Wednesday.

Brianna, aged 16 and from Birchwood, was found with fatal stab wounds on a path in Culcheth Linear Park on the afternoon of February 11.

A boy and a girl, both aged 15, have been charged with her murder. A plea hearing has been set for May at Liverpool Crown Court, with a trial date set for July.

Neither of the accused can be named because of their age.

At a brief two-minute hearing at Warrington Coroner’s Court, Jacqueline Devonish, senior coroner for Cheshire, opened and adjourned the inquest into Brianna’s death.

This will take place after the potential trial, with a date for pre-inquest hearing set for August 17.

DI Nigel Parr, senior investigating officer for the incident from Cheshire Police, has said: “The investigation is a murder investigation, and two individuals have been charged with the murder of Brianna.”

He confirmed the transgender teenager was found ‘unresponsive’ by members of the public in the park, and paramedics attended and confirmed the date of death.

A post-mortem examination was carried out at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, results of which were given at the hearing.

Brianna’s identity was confirmed by her mother Esther, the hearing was told. No family members were present at the hearing.

The funeral of the former Birchwood High School student will take place on March 15 at St Elphin’s Parish Church.

Attendees are encouraged to wear pink clothing to the service.

A fundraiser was set up to support Brianna’s family in the wake of her death, with donations pouring in from as far away as the United States, and the total has since exceeded £113,000.

Vigils were held across the country, as well as in Warrington, with mourners seeking to pay their respects to Brianna.
