WARRINGTON MP Andy Carter met with the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, this week in Downing Street.
Mr Carter, the Conservative representative for Warrington South, met with the Prime Minister on Tuesday, March 7, to discuss a number of issues that Warrington residents had raised.
Among the issues Mr Carter said the pair had discussed was the Government's new immigration plan, which was outlined fully this week with the slogan 'Stop the Boats.'
Rishi Sunak unveiled bold plans this week that pledged to prevent illegal channel crossings of migrants seeking to enter the UK illegally as a means of gaining asylum.
The policy, known now as 'Stop the Boats,' aims to: "Remove the incentive for people to risk their lives through these dangerous and unnecessary journeys and pull the rug from under the criminal gangs profiting from this misery once and for all."
Posting about their meeting on social media, Andy Carter MP said: "We discussed new legislation which will stop small boat crossings – as he promised to do when he laid out our five priorities at the start of the year.
"Previous bills have made progress on gripping this problem, and what he will announce takes that work forward.
"It will mean that those who come here on small boats can’t claim asylum here."
Mr Carter then added: "I know this is an issue many local people feel strongly about, we are a compassionate nation and we support genuine cases where families are fleeing from persecution.
"But we need to break the business model of criminal gangs who are putting lives at risk to come here."
When announcing the policy at a press conference this week, the Prime Minister would not be drawn on setting targets for migration, which means it will be difficult to judge how well the Government is getting on with its new plan.
