A COUNCILLOR has lashed out at those racing 4x4s and causing 'untold damage to wildlife and natural habitats.'
Rob Tynan, Conservative councillor for Woolston and Rixton, has joined forces with Cheshire Constabulary in order to combat antisocial behaviour in the area.
Cllr Tynan says he has been inundated with reports from residents regarding antisocial behaviour that has blighted the area in recent years.
The area in question is in Hollins Green, which the borough councillor claims is being used by those who are damaging the environment around Hollins Green and the Manchester Ship Canal.
Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, Cllr Tynan said: "For a number of years now this area in Hollins Green where the old slag heap from Irlam Steel Works used to dominate the skyline has gradually been taken over by nature after the slag heap was removed during the late '60s.
"I can remember as a child back in the '70s fishing for sticklebacks frogs and newts in the many pools there, but recently the area has been plagued by fly-tipping and people racing 4x4s, causing untold damage to wildlife and natural habitat.”
Cllr Tynan says that it is not uncommon to see parts from cars being ditched around the area, including seats torn out from vehicles and abandoned in areas of woodland.
The Woolston councillor added: "Large swathes of the area have been churned up by these old 4x4s obliterating some of the pools, damaging trees.
"Some of the vehicles that become irretrievable have been torched to hide identification and retrieved at a later date."
Cllr Tynan has since had meetings with local representatives of the police in order to tackle the issues residents have raised with him.
He said: "Now we’ve got the police and council involved, hopefully we can sort this problem out which is also causing issues with local residents due to the noise produced from revving engines and the spotlights from the vehicles shining into properties."
