MOTORISTS have been given an apology for the state of the surface on one of the area’s busiest motorways.
It comes after drivers reported a number of defects to the carriageway of the M6, which were compared by some to the ‘surface of the moon’.
One section highlighted in particular was the surface heading northbound between junction 22 for Winwick and Newton-le-Willows and junction 23 for Haydock.
National Highways says it is aware of areas that need attention, and work to repair potholes will be undertaken.
A spokesman said: “We are aware that some of the M6 road surfaces around Warrington and Haydock requires improvement.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.
“The work we are carrying out will see lanes one and four of the new upgraded stretch of the M6, between junctions 21a and 26, completely resurfaced with a low-noise road surfacing.
“We have surveyed all sections of the road that require attention and have already started carrying out repairs.
“Overnight closures of the road will be arranged to undertake further improvement work.”
