THE murder investigation into the death of 16-year-old Brianna Ghey continues.

Police launched a murder probe at the weekend after the Birchwood teenager was found with serious injuries in Culcheth.

A number of updates have been released over the past few days, and with that in mind, here’s what we know so far.

What happened?

At 3.13pm on Saturday, officers were called the Culcheth Linear Park.

Here, police found a girl with serious injuries who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A huge emergency service operation was launched with police immediately cordoning the nearby area off.

Police confirmed the death on Saturday at 7pm. By 11pm, they confirmed a teenaged girl had died and an operation was under way.

Yesterday, Monday, forensics and police dogs arrived at the scene.

Who has died?

On Sunday afternoon, police confirmed the identity of the girl as Brianna Ghey and released a photograph of her.

The 16-year-old was from Birchwood and was a student at Birchwood High School.

Yesterday, Monday, Brianna’s devastated family paid tribute to their ‘fearless’ and ‘one of a kind’.

They also said the loss of their daughter, granddaughter and baby sister has left a ‘massive hole’ in their family.

Brianna’s family are being supported by specialist officers.

Warrington Guardian:

What are police saying?

On Sunday, detective chief super intendent Mike Evans told the Warrington Guardian that police were following a number of lines of enquiry.

He added: “This is a truly awful attack on a 16-year-old girl, who has sadly lost her very short life. We are appealing for any information that will help us find who has done this to Brianna.

"I would like to reassure the local community that we are working hard to find those responsible for Brianna’s death and we have extra officers in and around Culcheth supporting the investigation. We also have officers supporting Brianna’s family at this really tragic time.”

Police say they are keeping an open mind but there is nothing to suggest it is a hate crime. Brianna was a transgender girl.

Who has been arrested?

Yesterday evening, officers confirmed they had arrested two 15-year-olds, a boy and girl, on suspicion of murder.

They said the teens are in custody assisting police with their investigation.

There has been no update since.

Tributes paid to Brianna

Tributes have flooded in for Brianna and a GoFundMe page set up to support her family has already raised more than £20,000.

Yesterday afternoon, Monday, schoolchildren left floral tributes at the entrance to Culcheth Linear Park.

Jordan Claydon, a 19-year-old student, had met Brianna and knew her friends. He placed a bunch of roses at the scene.

He said: "I just felt really bad for her. I knew her, mates of mine that knew her, from school. "I just felt really guilty, felt really bad for her, it must be horrible for her family. I can't imagine losing a daughter.

"She was really kind and like bubbly and energetic and sweet. She was quite introverted, but when you got to speak to her, she was bubbly and sweet and stuff."

Birchwood High School head teacher Emma Mills released a statement earlier today about Brianna who was a student at the school.

Ms Mills said the school is ‘shocked’ and ‘truly devastated’ by the news of the 16-year-old’s death.

It read: “We are shocked and truly devastated to hear of the death of Brianna.

“This is understandably a very difficult and distressing time for many, and we will do our utmost to support our pupils and wider school community.”
