TEACHING staff at Cardinal Newman Catholic High School have raised £1,500 in support of a 'special friend and colleague.'

22 teachers from the Latchford secondary school took part in a sponsored walking event, and they managed to raise £1,500 as a result of their efforts.

The teachers took part in the event to support their friend, and colleague, Lawrence Sherrington, following his brain cancer diagnosis at Christmas 2021.

Members of the school's teaching staff took part in Clatterbridge Cancer Charity's Glow Green Night Walk in Liverpool, on Friday, February 3.

The walk involved staff donning bright t-shirts and glow-in-the-dark accessories as part of the sponsored event.

Hosted by BBC personality Sam Quek, the Liverpool-based walk was attended in huge numbers, and the former hockey player paid tribute to all those taking part.

Sam said: "The atmosphere at Glow Green was absolutely electric, and it was wonderful to meet so many inspirational people who were taking part.

"Seeing a wave of green, sweeping through the city was so special.

"I’m proud to have been there supporting Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, a cause which is close to me and so many other local people.”

Sam spoke to a number of staff members from Cardinal Newman, including art and design teacher Helen Hunt, who said: "I'm very proud to take part in and support such a special event.

"We wanted to show how much Lawrence, a special friend and colleague means to us and the school, so we dedicated this walk to him."

Cardinal Newman headteacher Jo Langstaff added: "Clatterbridge has been an incredible support to one of our much-loved colleagues at Cardinal Newman.

"We're really glad we're able to support the amazing work they do by taking part in the Glow Green Walk.

"It's just one way in which we can show Clatterbridge how much their work means to communities like ours across the north west."

Katrina Bury, from Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said “We are so grateful for the support of everyone taking part and the incredible £140,000 raised so far.

"The money we raise will help to fund research, support services and innovations in care at Clatterbridge."
