A COMMUNITY group in Woolston has commemorated Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a fitting tribute.
The Woolston and District Women's Institute decided that they would honour the legacy of the late monarch with a tribute of their own, which can be seen on the bank of the River Mersey.
Paying tribute to Her late Majesty, the group planted a young mountain ash tree, in the hopes that it will flourish in the popular spot.
Already an area of astonishing natural beauty, the tree has been planted at the site of the former New Cut Canal lock, at the top of Weir Lane, in Woolston.
The area is a familiar spot for swans and other local wildlife - which recently included overhead passes of Icelandic pink-footed geese.
Woolston and District Women's Institute planted the ash tree at the end of November, and it has already been seen by many passers-by on the popular walking trail.
Speaking about the activities of the WI, the Woolston branch's president, Ann Brennan, said: "We have a really good time with a variety of activities- speakers who cover a multitude of interesting subjects, quizzes, raffles, and walks followed by a pub lunch.
"There are trips to the theatre and places of interest, book clubs and craft sessions.
"More than that, it’s a chance to meet up with friends old and new and to help each other when needed.
"It’s a lovely atmosphere as everyone is friendly and helpful - we are very keen to welcome new members."
Woolston and District Women's Institute meets on the fourth Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm, at the Mission Hall on Warren Lane, Woolston.
