A NEW documentary focusing on the Hong Kong protest movement in 2019 is set to screen at Warrington’s Parr Hall amid the growing population of people from Hong Kong in Warrington.
‘Love in the time of revolution’ will focus on the protests in Hong Kong in 2019.
The movement started after China announced they were planning to introduce a law that would allow them to extradite criminal suspects to mainland China from Hong Kong.
Whilst Hong Kong is technically within China, due to its position as a special administrative region there were several rights Hong Kong holds which protestors believed this law would violate.
There were also widespread fears this would simply be used as a move to be able to extradite and silence any critics of the Chinese government, such as Joshua Wong who had already been arrested on multiple occasions for his part in previous anti-Chinese protests.
The move sparked outrage, with 1,000,000 taking to the streets, and up to 2,000,000 protesting at the peak of the movement.
When demands were not met and protests continued, things became heated, with police filling the streets with tear gas and engaging in violent attacks on front-line protestors.
Protests lasted from March 2019 to midway through 2020.
The documentary follows several groups of protestors on the front lines, and “documents the passion, spirit and sacrifice of ordinary Hong Kongers during a time of political and social upheaval” and “tells their extraordinary stories: the stories of ordinary people at a pivotal moment in their city’s history, as they experience hope and desperation, love and heartbreak, fighting for their home.”
Tickets are available now, with both screenings on January 14.
