A BELOVED former mayor of Warrington has been recognised by Warrington Borough Council for his extraordinary service and commitment.
Mike Biggin was Mayor of Warrington in 2011/12, and also served for 16 years as a borough councillor for Grappenhall and Thelwall.
Mr Biggin, a former Liberal Democrat councillor, stepped down from public service earlier this year.
Mike's commitment was recognised at a council meeting on Monday, December 5, where it was unanimously agreed that he would be awarded the title of Honorary Alderman.
The position of Honorary Alderman is a ceremonial title which is open to any person who, in the eyes of the council, has given eminent service to the area in a public position.
This honorary position is not political and is intended to fully recognise the outstanding contributions made by someone to the community and wider town.
Mike served as a councillor from 2006 until he stepped down from the Grappenhall and Thelwall position this year.
No objections were raised from any members of any party in the council to Mike's appointment as Honorary Alderman.
Cllr Russ Bowden, leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: "Mike spent a number of years supporting his communities and was a truly committed councillor.
“I always enjoyed working alongside Mike and engaging in good debate and discussion with him. He was a hard-working, welcoming, respectful councillor and a real asset to both the council and the people he represented.
“I will also remember his lively and colourful mayoral year.
Cllr Bowden added: “I valued Mike’s input and contributions he made during his tenure as borough councillor and we will miss him as he leaves this role at the council.
"Being recognised as Honorary Alderman is something Mike definitely deserves.”
