HAVING finally made the move from Australia, Paul Vaughan can get to work with his Warrington Wolves teammates.
Following an NRL career which saw him earn representative honours at State of Origin and international level, the 31-year-old is coming for a crack at Super League with The Wire.
If an impressive 2022 with Canterbury Bulldogs is anything to go by, Daryl Powell looks set to have a high-class prop still close to the peak of his powers at his disposal.
For the moment, though, Vaughan has plenty of adapting to do having started pre-season training – albeit slightly later than planned.
“I was a week late to pre-season, which was a little unfortunate,” he said.
“My initial plan was to get here nice and early to get our bearings but we’re trying to pick up as much as we can.
“It’s a big move from Australia and it’s a different lifestyle, but we’re here with an open mind and wanting to buy into everything.
“We moved into Stockton Heath – it’s a great little town and community around there. The wife’s loving it so as long as she’s happy!
“The neighbours are good and have made us feel nice and welcome, so we’re just trying to get around and fit in as much as we can.
“The weather is surprisingly okay – we’re from Canberra which can get pretty cold in the winter so we’re used to the cold weather.
“The boys have been really welcoming. I know last year wasn’t the most ideal season, but there’s a lot of fresh faces here now and we’re looking forward to having a crack.
“You can see from the signings that there’s been a pretty big focus on the middle and on size up front.
“There’s a few familiar faces here – the likes of Josh McGuire and big Sam Kasiano – who I’m looking forward to playing in the middle with.
“It’s a tough job in the middle week in week out, but I wanted to come over here and test myself.
“I did everything I set out to achieve in the NRL, so I wanted to come over and have a good crack. I’m 31 and I feel good physically.”
By the looks of things, Vaughan will be used from the start before the likes of Kasiano come from the bench – a role the New Zealander has perfected during his spell with Catalans Dragons.
The two were frequent opponents Down Under but now, they will hope to combine to get Warrington on the front foot.
“I remember playing against Sammy back in the NRL when he was at the Bulldogs,” Vaughan said.
“He’s a big lad and he’s been playing some top footy for a long time. It’s good to see him and it’s going to be exciting to play alongside him.
“I’m excited to play with Gil (Dudson) too – he looks like he’s a real goer.
“We’ve just got to try and build some combinations and create a strong bond.”
