THE final block of a building which has been branded as ‘Warrington’s ugliest’ is set to be demolished.

Crews have made good progress in demolishing New Town House in the town centre as the major demolition project reaches its latter stages.

Workmen moved onto the site in September after plans were approved for its demolition.

Built in 1976, the structure originally housed the new town operations for Warrington and Runcorn.

It was offices for many departments at Warrington Borough Council before staff relocated to the newly built Time Square offices.

Plans have since been approved for 900 homes on the site, made up of six block buildings measuring up to nine stories high.

The council previously said it planned to demolish the office space, proposing that turning the site into housing will ‘reduce the risk’ of needing to build on green spaces in the borough.

This project is part of a large-scale £99million town regeneration scheme that has been passed by planning chiefs.

This involves demolishing several sites around the perimeter of Cockhedge Shopping Centre to build homes, a hotel and new office spaces.
