FORMER Great Sankey High School student Adam Davies could make his World Cup finals debut against England in Qatar after today’s 2-0 loss for Wales against Iran.

First choice goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey saw red in Wales' second Group B World Cup clash for a reckless challenge on Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi.

Hennessey’s dismissal has opened the door for Warrington-raised shot stopper Davies, 30, to make his finals debut and collect his fifth cap for his country.

Sheffield United netminder Davies was selected alongside Danny Ward of Leicester City as back-up to 35-year-old Hennessey and will be hoping to get the nod for Wales’ final Group B clash against England at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Tuesday, kick-off 7pm.

When Davies, who was born in Germany, was growing up in the town he was crowned Warrington Under 16s Sports Personality of 2007.

That was rewards for his efforts as the England Schoolboys under 16s goalkeeper and for his appearances with the Great Sankey High School rugby league team.

Warrington Guardian:

Davies started his career at Everton, but left without making a first-team appearance.

He moved to Barnsley for the 2014/15 season, going on to make 184 appearances before leaving for Stoke City in 2019.

In that time, he made his debut for Wales in 2019 in a 1-0 win against Trinidad & Tobago.

This season, Davies moved to Sheffield United, acting as understudy to Wes Foderingham.
