WARRINGTON Wolves have announced their fifth and sixth signings for the 2023 season this week and fans have been having their say on the new arrivals and the club’s decisions.
Both of the latest newcomers plied their trade with French clubs in Super League last season.
First of all scrum-half Josh Drinkwater was confirmed on Wednesday as a new recruit from Catalans Dragons.
And then yesterday Matty Russell arrived after his year with promoted (and then relegated) Toulouse Olympique.
Here’s a selection of what’s being said by supporters on the Warrington Guardian website, its news and Wolves Facebook pages, and of course Twitter.
First up, the verdict on The Wire snapping up Drinkwater:
David William Taylor: Great signing, takes pressure off Williams, and behind our pack we look strong for next year
Luke @LukeKicks89: Quality signing, just what we needed. COTW
Peter Mckeown: Will be gone next season. Can't settle if doesn't get his own way
Lee Chambers: No excuses Mr Powell.. like zero. That’s a good size front row (you bleated about it) and you’ve as good a spine as we’ve had at 1, 6, 7 & 9 as we have had in a long time.
Dean Eddyshaw: I'm disappointment to see him depart (Catalans) as he's been superb since his return from Hull KR in 2020. He'll kick Warrington into the playoffs next season behind the big forward pack that Daryl Powell has assembled. Good luck @josh_drinkwater. #CatalansDragons #LesDracs #SuperLeague
Toulouse-Catalan Media 🇫🇷🏉 @catalanmedia: Gotta good 'un there Wire. Allez Drinkez!!
jacques smart @jacquessmart2: Can we have croft instead?
Tangerinewire: Yep, we are looking strong in the middle and should be able to make good meters, we need a centre to complete. Top four at least.
Wire1999: Don't care what the usual trolls say I for 1 am looking forward to the new season good forwards decent halfbacks n some quick players in the back line, comon the wire !!!!!!
casino soul: just need a new centre now for chistmas.
And these are some of the thoughts in this week’s follow-up signing, Matty Russell:
Rob Parker: always been a fan of @mattyrussell3 glad he’s back at the wire.
Nigel Rigby: Poor signing wasn’t good enough last time around
CHRIMAC @gardenguy123: Genuinely astonished by this signing when we need a centre. Thought our days of being a laughing stock might be about to change with a big aggressive pack and Drinkwater signing and then we go and do this. Same old Wire.
DM @davidmanfredi11 replying to @gardenguy123: We’ve got ratch for Centre, this is a good signing. One of Toulouse best players, knows the club, has a solid impact for starting sets off on the front foot. Don’t get what’s astonishing
CHRIMAC @gardenguy123 replying to @davidmanfredi11: I suppose my main concern is that we are down a centre and do this. Which of Saints, Wigan, Catalan or Huddersfield squads would he make?
delboy (ex Perth UK): Got to give him a chance, hope it works out for him
Andy Bibby: Welcome back Matty. #onceawirealwaysawire you’ll become the first Wire player to wear the same heritage number on his shirt twice in two different spells.
Wayne @Wayne244280761: I'm now excited to go and watch Wire in 2023 ,they look a quality squad ..
Gary 'Lyle' Lovatt: That's my missus wanting to go to the matches again!
Mark Melvin: Wow is this April fool David Sharp: Can't think of many players who have gotten rid of, then resigned again. The only one I can think of are Dave Chisnall, Mark Hilton & Mike Cooper.
Will Dawson Aquinas Politics @Aquinaspolitics: Thought Matty was underrated. I'm happy to see him back.
Anthony Poole: Dont understand this signing at all! Good luck to him though
realistic southstander: Happy to have Matty back. I agree with him that he is now a better player than when he left. At the same time we still need a sizeable centre to improve our chances of success. If there is no money left then we could always move Currie there temporarily. There should be no problem getting enough ball and making decent yardage which we struggled to do lasts season. Let's make sure we capitalise on that!
Paperweight: Now that's a rabbit out of the bag , I like Russel and wish him every success on his return.
