A DRUNK who was reported acting in a disorderly manner attacked police when they were called to the scene.

Wojciech Czerniej was found to have assaulted two officers in an in ‘unprovoked and serious’ incident.

The 30-year-old was subsequently charged with two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker and one of being drunk and disorderly.

He appeared to be sentenced at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, November 2, where he was told that while a custodial sentence was necessary, it would not be immediate.

Angela Blackmore, prosecuting, told the court how the three charges all occurred on October 12.

Police were called to the Tesco Express garage on Winwick Road after reports of a man acting in a drunk and disorderly manner.

When officers arrived, one male and one female, they were assaulted by Czerniej while exercising their public duty.

Before sentencing, chair magistrate Paul Chadwick stated that the unacceptable assaults on police officers amounted to an ‘unprovoked attack of a serious nature’.

However, taking the defendant’s guilty pleas into account, he said magistrates could suspend the custodial sentence because of his previous good character, remorse and the fact he is a ‘good prospect of rehabilitation’.

Czerniej, of Cabul Close in Orford, was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for two years.

He must also complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation of £200, costs to the Crown Prosecution Service of £120 and a surcharge to fund victim services of £187.
