Longford born lad Jesse Lingard has opened up about his mental health in a new documentary on Channel 4.

‘UNTOLD: The Jesse Lingard Story’ features Lingard giving a frank look into his life and struggles with mental health.

The 60-minute insight is framed around the lead-up to the World Cup squad announcement, which the Warrington-native did not feature in following a poor start to the season with new club Nottingham Forest.

Lingard is an ex-William Beamont High School pupil and started his career at Penketh United, before going on to find success for Manchester United, West Ham, and England.

The documentary expands on issues he has previously discussed, with his mother’s battle with mental health leading to Lingard having to take over care for his younger siblings

For the first time however he has spoken about how he turned to alcohol to deal with the online abuse he was receiving over his performances in the past.

Lingard said: “I hope the audience sees how resilient I was even in situations that were really hard.

Even in sport when you have mental breakdowns, it’s important that your mental state and your health comes first.

Hopefully my story inspires more people to deal with situations that they’re going through and to be open about mental health”

The news has led to many coming out in support of Lingard over his openness regarding his mental health struggles.
