WARRINGTON Town are providing their goalkeeper Tony Thompson with support as investigations take place into a fan’s despicable ‘urine’ act during Saturday’s home FA Trophy defeat to Guiseley.
During a break in play in the second half, summer signing Thompson, 28, was ‘knocked sick’ when he took a drink from what he thought was his water bottle placed inside the goal, only to then realise his bottle had been swapped by a supporter for one full of urine.
The former Altrincham FC netminder’s reaction was to squirt the said fan with the bottle’s contents, a move which led to Thompson being sent off.
Reports of the incident appeared in national newspapers on Sunday and across digital media over the weekend, while footage which has gone viral on social media shows in six seconds a man climbing the perimeter wall behind Thompson’s goal and making the bottle exchange before leaping back on to the terrace.

Liverpool-born Thompson, who was previously on the books at Rotherham United, Curzon Ashton (loan), Ossett Town (loan), Chelmsford City (loan), Southport (loan), Morecambe, Chester and AFC Fylde before his five years with Altrincham ended upon signing for Yellows in July, was left ‘outraged’ by what had occurred.
“Today I fell out of love with the GAME,” said Thompson on Twitter.
“I’ve been called many names but for someone to p*** in my bottle, for me to drink it and then to be told I wasn’t allowed to react because I’m a player is outrageous.
“That person has put me my family’s health at risk and knocked me sick.”
Both Warrington Town and their West Yorkshire opponents have issued statements condemning the fan’s actions, with Thompson’s welfare highlighted by Yellows as the primary concern.
“The club is supporting goalkeeper Tony Thompson following the well-publicised incident that led to his sending off in the FA Trophy defeat to Guiseley at Cantilever Park on Saturday,” says the Warrington Town statement.
“Our priority is ensuring that Tony is given the support he needs given the attention that the story is receiving, and we know he is thankful for the messages of support he has received, particularly from other goalkeepers.”

The Town statement also reveals that Cheshire Police have become involved.
“The process of reviewing the video footage is ongoing. We note the statement from Guiseley AFC and will be providing them with the video footage,” it says.
“It goes without saying that the incident is deplorable and has no place in non-league football, football or society in general.
“We have also been contacted by Cheshire Police regarding the incident.
“We will await the referee’s report and FA charge before deciding what action to take regarding the red card.”
Guiseley’s statement includes a request for information leading to the identification of the individual concerned.
“The club have requested match and CCTV footage from Warrington Town so we can investigate the incident involving a spectator entering the field of play and swapping Tony Thompson’s drinks bottle in the second half of the fixture,” it says.
“We are aware of a video circulating on social media which shows an individual swapping the bottles in the goal area, and that the replaced bottle allegedly contained urine. We unreservedly condemn this disgraceful action.
“Guiseley AFC is a family friendly football club with a core of regular and committed travelling supporters.
“Unfortunately we do not have any information as to the identity of this individual. We urge anyone able to help in identifying them to email admin@guiseleyafc.co.uk.
“This information will be used in our investigation alongside the match footage.
“We deplore the actions of the individual(s) concerned and we will work alongside Warrington Town and the police to identify them. If the individual(s) involved can be identified they will receive life bans from attending Guiseley AFC fixtures.”
Yellows lost the second-round tie 1-0 after conceding to Lewis Whitham in the 90th minute.
