WARRINGTON Wolves, Brisbane Broncos and Australia Test legend Allan Langer is in town.

Fans of The Wire bumped into superstar ex-scrum half 'Alfie' in some of the town's pubs at the weekend and grabbed themselves a selfie or two.

Langer said he was in the country on a three-week visit, timed to fit in with the Rugby League World Cup.

In what was seen as a major coup for Super League, 'Alfie' came out of short-term retirement at the age of 33 to sign for Darryl Van de Velde's Warrington Wolves team in 2000, going on to make 55 appearances over two seasons before returning Down Under to have a last hurrah with Brisbane.

Warrington Guardian:

He was one of the most gifted players of his era, and a highly decorated talisman for the hugely successful Broncos in the 1980s and 1990s who was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame in 2008.

Langer was crowned the Dally M Halfback of the Year in 1988, 1994, 1996; the Dally M representative Player of the Year in 1991 and 1998, the Dally M Player of the Year

in 1996 as well as the RLW Player of the Year in 1996.

He led a middle-of-the-table Wire outfit to two Challenge Cup semi-finals and his form in primrose and blue led to an unprecedented emergency recall to State of Origin selection, guiding Queensland to a famous victory over New South Wales in the 2001 series decider.
