A PRISONER who smuggled prohibited items into a Warrington prison has been handed extra time behind bars.

Edward Chan conveyed medication to tackle erectile dysfunction into HM Prison Thorn Cross, as well as mobile phones.

The 33-year-old was caught however, and he was charged with two counts of conveying a ‘list A’ prohibited article into a prison, as well as five counts involving ‘list B’ items.

He subsequently appeared before Chester Crown Court on Tuesday, October 25, where he pleaded guilty to all seven charges and the case progressed to sentence.

The court heard how at 11am on March 1 this year, the defendant returned to HM Prison Thorn Cross in Appleton Thorn after a period of home leave.

Prison officers found this to be unusual as Chan had arrived back early, having not been due back for a number of hours,

A routine search found poor stitching at the bottom of his gym bag, and this revealed the stash of prohibited items.

The list A items were found to be three sealed packs each of two types of drugs, namely Sildamax and alprazolam.

The former is a unregulated drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, while the latter is fast-acting, potent tranquilizer used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

Among the list B items were five black Apple iPhones, six iPhone charging cables, a generic charging cable, a Giffgaff sim card and an EE sim card.

At the conclusion of his Chester Crown Court appearance, Chan, of Farm Avenue in Stretford, was sentenced to eight months in prison.
