A PUBLIC inquiry looking into plans to increase the price of Warbuton Toll Bridge will begin today in Warrington at the Village Hotel.
The controversy around the proposal came after it was announced prices would hike from 12p to £1 - the first price increase it has had for more than 130 years.
This is part of a wider ambitious £6.5million scheme to upgrade approach roads, footpaths and tolling system by The Manchester Ship Canal Company, which owns and operates the bridge.
The bridge was first built in 1863 and connects Rixton to Warburton.
The plans were first announced in the summer and were met with anger by residents and members of the council, with Warrington MP’s Charlotte Nichols and Andy Carter objecting the proposal.
The inquiry is expected to last five days and will start today at 10am.
MP Charlotte Nichols is listed to speak along with four other local MP's and statements will be heard from campaign groups and parish councils.
