THIS week in Looking Back we travel back to the 1970s.

This nostalgic image shows the old market hall which is now the centrepiece of Golden Square.

It shows shoppers looking for fresh fruit, fish and cheese which was among the items on sale.

Originally built as an open shed adjoining a covered hall, it was designed by Stevens as part of an early regeneration of the area in the mid-1850s.

By the 1970s, the structure was obscured by ugly side panelling which protected the traders and shoppers alike from poor weather.

It moved to the market hall which stood until it was replaced by the new hall last year.

As we reported in the Warrington Guardian last week, market boss Andy Ward was given a lifetime achievement last month for his more than 30 years of working in markets.
