WARRINGTON's Brexit border facility in Appleton Thorn is to close this month - less than two years after it opened.
The government bought the former Shearings site in 2020 and opened it for HGVs in early 2021 after the Brexit transition period ended.
There were fears at the time that with the site to be opened 24/7, south Warrington could have been inundated with large lorries on small, countryside lanes.
An average of only 30 vehicle movements a day were made at the facility since it opened.
Fears had been raised over the prospect of more than 1,000 lorry movements a day at the facility.
But now the site will close on November 13.
And it will no longer accept import movements from midnight on Sunday.
There is no news on yet on what the site could be used for in future.
