OVER the festive period, we are looking back on some of our favourite stories from 2022.
Today, the closure of one of the town's most popular fish and chip shops back in April
AFTER almost 50 years, the original Kong's Fish and Chips shop in Latchford has shut for the last time.
The chippy, which was opened in May, 1973 on Henshall Avenue and was followed by two other Kong's across Warrington, has closed its doors.
Kin Kong, nephew to his aunty, Che Mui Hung and uncle Wayne Hung who owned the shop for the past 27 years, said: “My aunt and uncle had been working at that chippy for so long they were due to retire.
“It’s sad to see it go but it was just about time for them to retire.
“It’s been there very long and a lot of people have fond memories of the shop.
“The next generation wasn’t inheriting the legacy or carrying on the shop so it had to come to an end sadly.”
Kin thanked all of the visitors who came to the shop.
The 52-year-old, who has helped out at Kong's in the past, continued: “My family are very grateful for all the support from the customers over the years.
“They are sorry that they had to close the shop – it’s the end of an era.
“Not just for my aunty and uncle but for the whole Kong's family.
“My grandad started it and he’s 97. Everybody, including my grandad, thanks our customers and everybody who came to Kong's over the years. Especially our neighbours in Latchford who had never complained about any noise that might have caused a disturbance while the shop was busy during the night.
“We made good fish and chips and a lot of people have fond memories.
"It was important for our family to have served the Latchford and Warrington communities over the years."
