LABOUR Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols says new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ‘does not have any legitimate mandate to govern the British people’ as she calls for a general election.

The politician believes the public need to get a say on the direction and leadership of the country.

She said: “While we are all relieved that Liz Truss’s catastrophic prime ministership is over, and Boris Johnson’s debunked egotrip failed, the truth is that Rishi Sunak does not have any legitimate mandate to govern the British people.

“He was beaten in the Tory members’ vote this summer, and has now been installed by a couple of hundred MPs without having said how he will fix our country’s problems.

“As the super-rich economic architect of so many of our miseries he is not the right person for the job and it is past time for the British people to finally get a say on the direction and leadership of our country.

“We don’t need a new Tory Prime Minister; we need a general election.”

Meanwhile, in a tweet, Tory Warrington South MP Andy Carter said ‘well done’ to Mr Sunak on becoming the new leader of the Conservatives and Prime Minister.

He added: “Huge challenges ahead and people across the UK are counting on us to deliver.”
