The Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) World Cup is officially under way in Warrington following a launch event last night, Monday, at Cineworld.

‘The Last Leg’ comedian Adam Hills, who plays for Australia, held a screening of ‘Take His Legs’: the documentary that follows his journey to play for the Warrington Wolves PDRL team and help them become the first PDRL club world champions.

All four teams, England, Wales, New Zealand, and Australia attended – with a Q&A from the captains and players alongside Adam.

George Tonna, the Australian coach and founder of the PDRL in Australia, said that “It’s a sport for everyone and an honour and privilege to be here… I play against all these guys knowing they have the same story as me.”

Shaun Briscoe, England’s head coach and former England Rugby League player, said: “You can create a great spectacle, regardless of what disability you have got. It’s about ability not disability.”

‘Take His Legs’ centres heavily around Warrington, with the Warrington Wolves being the first PDRL team set up in the UK.

The Australian comedian spoke at the event about how he was working on a follow up documentary chronicling the first ever PDRL World Cup taking place in Warrington, and how important the town had been to setting up PDRL in the UK.

He said: “Warrington have been amazing, the Warrington Wolves were the first foundation to set up a Physical Disability Rugby League team in the UK, but more importantly than that they were the first team to WANT to set up a PDRL team in the UK.

"For me this is the perfect town to have started this journey, and to have the first men’s PDRL World Cup.

"This will all mean nothing [however] if we don’t have another in three years’ time at the France World Cup. This will be amazing, this will be great, but we’ve got to follow it up, we’ve got to make sure we do it bigger and better.”
