WARRINGTON Athletics Club’s under 15s runners excelled in the first round of the Manchester Area Cross Country League which took place at Wythenshawe Park on Saturday.

Jack Marwood was the only boy in the age group from the club taking part and he was an excellent winner in 16mins 13secs.

In the girls’ race, Imogen Wharton was an outstanding winner in 17mins 22secs with teammate Esme Heavey following her in second place in 18mins 02secs.

Along with Ellie Barker, 19th in 20mins 24secs, they won the team event on 22 points.

The B team of Hannah Hull, 20th in 20mins 28secs, Sarah Ashcroft, 29th in 21mins 47secs and Emma Whiston, 31st in 21mins 57secs, finished in sixth place and were first B team on 80 points.

Lucie Davies was the only under 17s woman competing from the club and crossed the line fourth in her race in 25mins 15secs.

In the senior women’s race, Claire Andrew ran excellently to finish in 11th place in 33mins 12secs, placing her third in the over 40s age group.

Faith Robertswas 137th in 39mins 35secs, placing her 50th in the 20-34 age group.

Sharon Taylor crossed the line in 276th place overall in 46mins 43secs, placing her 32nd in the over 50s age group.

In the under 13s boys’ race, Oliver Davenport ran excellently to finish sixth in 11mins 47secs, with Euan Lawton also running well to finish ninth in 11mins 59secs.

Evie May Williams ran strongly to complete the girls’ race ninth in 12mins 55secs and, along with Emily Kinsey, 16th in 13mins 17secs, and Orlaith Clarke, 33rd in 14mins 04secs, the A team finished fifth on 58 points.

The B team of Annie Noone, 41st in14mins 26secs, Ellie-Grace Stuart, 46th in 14mins 48secs and Ruby Brazier-Kobus, 59th in 15mins 46secs, registered as 15th team and third B team on 146 points.

In the senior men’s race there were three runners from the club, with two named Dave Watson but no relation.

Young Dave was first to finish in 72nd place overall in 36mins 43secs, placing him third in the over 50s age group.

Daniel Schofield was next to finish in 125th place in 38mins 19secs and the older Dave Watson, following his selection to represent Wales in the upcoming Masters Home International, finished 285th overall in 43mins 32secs placing him second in the over 65s age group.

Meanwhile, David Gill travelled to Derby to take part in the North Midlands Cross Country League at Markeaton Park where there was a selection race for the English team for the Masters Home International

As Dave was to turn 65 yesterday, Monday, he was allowed to run in the over 65s race and finished in sixth place in 26mins 59secs.

With the first three finishers being guaranteed selection, Dave now waits to see if he will be selected for the team or as a reserve.

In the race for runners up to the over 60s age group, Steve Watmough was 28th in 40mins 57secs to win the over 60s age group and gained automatic selection for the Home International event.
