SERVICES in Warrington are under ‘increasing pressure’ to meet the needs of children and young people with complex emotional needs and mental health difficulties.

The issue is highlighted in a report which will come before the protecting the most vulnerable policy committee at its meeting later today, Wednesday.

The report is being provided to enable members to consider the development of a complex needs service in the town to meet the needs of children with complex emotional wellbeing and mental health needs.

The committee is invited to consider future policy and practice in supporting vulnerable children.

The report says: “The local system in Warrington (and regionally/nationally) is under increasing pressure to meet the needs of children and young people with complex emotional needs and mental health difficulties.

“Initial scoping of Warrington data highlights the opportunity to better meet the needs and improve outcomes for a small but complex cohort of children and young people who would benefit from a co-ordinated and intensive offer ensuring they experience improved mental, physical and emotional wellbeing, reduce high-risk behaviours and make a successful transition to adulthood.”

Meanwhile, councillors are also set to be briefed on the challenges over recruiting and retaining qualified social workers within the children’s workforce at the meeting.

The committee will be invited to consider the ongoing recruitment and retention strategy and offer advice regarding future policy commitment to support and enhance the approach.

The report highlights ‘high levels’ of turnover which have resulted in vacant posts across the service, but ‘clustered mainly’ in the children in need teams.
