MORE than 150 homes could be built on green belt land in north Warrington.
Manchester-based Bellway Homes has its sights set on land off Golborne Road in Winwick.
An early bid to Warrington Borough Council says it wants to build 161 homes and an access road on the fields.
The land, around six hectares to the north of the village, is currently protected as green belt.
But should the council's local plan – which governs where development is allowed in the next two decades – be approved then this land would be free for developers.
As such Bellway has put in a 'scoping option' report, freeing the way for a full and detailed planning application at a later date.
A mixture of detached and semi-detached dwellings are proposed on the land with public open
space and landscaped areas. All of the homes would be accessed from Golborne Road according to planning documents.
The site lies immediately north of Winwick water treatment works site. And is also to the east of the registered historic battlefield – Battle of Winwick during the Civil War (also known as Battle of Red Bank 1648).
A statement from Bellway in the planning documents states: "The allocation and subsequent development of the site will provide much needed new homes of a mix of tenures and sizes to meet local needs, and will deliver a range of social, economic and environmental benefits."
The developer says it aims to be on site by September next year.
And the aim would be to have all the development completed by summer 2028.
