THIS month marks 35 years since IKEA Warrington opened its doors for the first time.

The Swedish furniture giant opened on October 1, 1987.

Thousands of people - including some who had camped out in the days beforehand - visited the country's inaugural Ikea.

Customers from across the country turned up and at the time of the opening, the store was allowed 7,000 people in the building at any one time.

But the opening day exceeded this number and was described as ‘absolute bedlam’, with special offers on – including sofas for £25 and bookcases for £5.

Staff from the Gemini Retail Park store celebrated its 35 years with cake and talks were given by co-workers who have been with IKEA Warrington from the beginning.

IKEA Warrington will also be hosting a range of October half-term events.

These include a photo booth, a treasure hunt and marine environmentalism with a new soft toy range.
