Well it's been a few weeks since my last blog and to be honest the results have not been to good for us. 4 Super Leagues losses on the bounce has took a bit of wind out of our sails, but to get a win at Cardiff's Millennium stadium was just what we needed.
I think the way in which we won that game shows the character in the team. I think we sent out some signals that this team his willing to fight and not give up. To be fair I don't think there is one game all year were we have give up and there is always 100% given by the players. Its probably fair to say we aren't playing the best rugby at the moment, you can see watching the guys that sometimes we are trying too hard and we want to try score the silkiest tries in Super League, I don't think we like scoring the simple tries. If you look back at the tries we have scored, the handling skills involved are at the highest level but we do seem to want to do that all the time. We have been working on completion and building pressure on teams and that's certainly something we'll need to do against Saints. I really think we have the players to beat Saints and hopefully it will be this week because we only have one chance with the Challenge Cup.
Watching the game at Cardiff definitely give me some grey hairs! I was on the edge of my seat for the full 80 minutes. The players certainly give the crowd their money's worth entertainment wise. I thought there were some good individual performances last weekend and hopefully we can put all that together this week and beat Saints. I think this week will have to be a big battle for the forwards. The middle of the field is going to have to be dominated and the foundations will have to be set early on in the game. I think we'll need to stop the off load from St Helens because once they get onto a roll they can get from one end of the field to the other with ease. We'll be looking to control the tackle and stop them from getting on a roll. Its going to be a tough game because warm weather is forecasted, so I think its going to be important we use the interchange bench wisely and that when Saints make there changes we control them well and that they don't make an impact. I really hope this week we turn Saints over because there as been a lot of hard work done by the players and I know they are desperate for the win.
On a personal note it gives me chance to give an update of my injury. The rehab is going good although I am not going to be back as early as first thought. After a few weeks of rehab it has been decided I should change my rehab programme, which has slightly delayed the comeback date. I have responded really well to the change and the shoulder is feeling a lot better and hopefully I will be back sooner rather then later but the main thing is I don't rush the rehab and I come back when the shoulder is healed.
Lets hope this week is a good one for us and that we have something to smile about, come on the Wire!
Speak soon, Woody.
