Well I think we can be pleased with how the Easter weekend has gone.
2 wins from 2 games is a good weekends work.
Although Stuart Reardon and Lee Briers limped off at Castleford, it doesn't look to serious and hopefully they will respond well to treatment this week. Stuart seemed to have a slight hamstring pull and Lee seemed to have a slight calf problem, it just goes to show how tough and demanding playing 2 games in one weekend is on the players.
I think the attitude of all the players was excellent over Easter, its a really tough ask to play two games so close together but there was no complaints from any of the boys and they got about there business well! Against Huddersfield we ground the win out well and we was patient with the ball, and we played the conditions well. We knew we had to win against Huddersfield and that put a little pressure onto the lads but i think they handled it well. We know if we want to improve as a team we have to be patient and sometimes just win by playing the simple stuff and that's just taking the ball up the middle of the park and getting to a kick.
Castleford was a very similar game in that we just had to be patient and play the conditions. In the first 20 minutes we made the game look easy and i thought we was going to run away with the game, but Castleford came back well and they certainly give us a tough game. We played to the whistle and scored right at the end and that shows great character and confidence in the players and it was a game we had to win. At training we have assessed both games and you can see there is a lot of improvement being made and players are starting to learn about each other.
You can clearly see that the players are responding to one another better and reactions of the plays are quicker. The forwards are playing really tough and fast and that's the reason we have been starting games well, it gives a good platform for the back line and with the quality of the backs then you know tries are going to be scored!
This weekend will see the Harlequins come to the Halliwell Jones and it proves to be a real tester for us. Harlequins have started better then most people would of predicted and i think thats down to there coach Brian Mcderrmot, he's got a lot of good ideas and he knows exactly how to firer his players up. After the loss they had against Bradford over the weekend then i am sure they will want to get back to winning ways. It proves to be one of our toughest games yet in terms of patients with the ball because Harlequins will just try to grind us down until we come up with the errors. We know we have to be smart with the ball and take our chances when they present. With the improvement we are making week in week out then we have to be confident of winning this game.
Hopefully we will see a return for Simon Grix, after his ankle operation he has responded well to treatment and he says he feels good. I would love it if he made a return this week because he hasn't had much luck with injuries and he his a quality player when fit. Plus it will get him away from me in the rehab group were he is constantly telling me about how good Yorkshire is and that it's better then lancashire!
I am also doing well with the shoulder injury and hopefully will be able to play in 6-7 weeks. I have been doing rehab constantly for the last 3 weeks and it feels really good, i am getting my flexibility back and its getting stronger by the day.
Michael Monaghan is also looking to be available this week and he was gutted to have missed the Easter weekend. The coaches and medical staff obviously though it was the right decision to rest him and hopefully we will see him continue his great form he has shown so far this season. The support at Castleford was excellent. After all the bad weather we have had to get so many fans making the trip was great to see and the players really appreciate it, your support doesn't go unnoticed and its really pleasing to see so many Primrose and Blue shirts.
Thanks again and speak soon, Woody.
