THE heartbroken family of a ‘wonderful and doting’ mum who died in a serious crash in Birchwood have paid tribute to her.

Hilda Broughton, from Woolston, sadly died in a fatal collision on Ordnance Avenue in Birchwood at 10.09am on Tuesday, August 30.

The 66-year-old was a passenger in a car which flipped onto its roof in the one-vehicle crash at the roundabout by the fire station.

The driver, a 68-year-old man from Woolston, is recovering from his serious injuries in hospital.

Hilda was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but she sadly died on Thursday, September 1.

“We are truly devastated at the tragic loss of my mum,” her family said in a statement.

“She was not only a wonderful mum, but also a loving wife to my dad, a doting nannie to her grandchildren and a great friend.

“We would like to give our sincere thanks to the emergency services who helped my parents at the scene of the accident.

“We are also grateful to the hospital staff who cared for mum and who continue to care for my dad at this time.”

An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene after firefighters freed the two occupants, using specialist equipment to stabilise the car and rescue those inside.

As well as the air ambulance, two ambulances, an advanced paramedic and an operational commander all attended, as well as two fire engines from Birchwood and Warrington fire stations.

Police closed both ends of Ordnance Avenue while the incident was dealt with.

Cheshire Police previously launched an appeal for witnesses of the accident to come forward

Sgt Andy Dennison said: “I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, but has not yet spoken to police, or anyone with dashcam footage, to get in touch.”
