STRAIGHT men pretending to be gay to beat the system, why does this remind me of Coronation Street?
Although Les and Kirk may have played their gay/straight relationship to better effect than Adam Sandler and Kevin Smith, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry turns into a surprisingly sweet tale.
Chuck, played by Sandler and Smith's Larry pretend to be partners so that Larry can make sure his kids get his pension following the death of his wife.
Ladies man Chuck finds life as a gay' hard, but when someone from the pension's department comes sniffing around to see whether the relationship is genuine their act soon makes them heroes and villains to people in their life.
It may start out as a chauvinistic tale of straight men playing gay but opens up to a touching tale of acceptance and friendship.
Sandler is not at his best in this film but seeing his character change from a sexist and slightly homophobic guy into a caring friend is touching and Steve Buscemi is criminally under used as the sneaky Clive from the pensions department.
Trust me, the beginning may have you screwing your feet up in contrite shame but stick with it and you might just like it.
