CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Warrington's driving test centre from closure have been given a massive boost.

Members of Warrington's Professional Driving Instructors Association lobbied a crucial meeting last week in a bid to keep the Long Lane centre open.

As previously reported in the Warrington Guardian, learner drivers would have to take their tests in St Helens under the new plans.

Now, Rosemary Thew, chief executive of the Driving Standards Agency - the organisation looking to make the changes - has agreed to meet the protestors in Warrington.

Mark Blackburn, from the PDIA in Warrington, said: "The protest was very successful and we got a lot of attention. We managed to get to talk to Rosemary Thew about the planned closure in Warrington and she agreed to personally come and meet with us to discuss the issue."

At the DSA meeting in Charnock Richard, Chorley, campaigners from Warrington asked questions about the plans.

They also met colleagues from Blackpool - another centre that faces closure.

Mr Blacburn added: "There was an acknowledgement that Warrington and Blackpool closures may be looked at again."

Meanwhile, Lord Hoyle has also written a letter to add his support to the campaign while the closure of the centre itself has now been delayed until September.

The group has already received lots of letters from the pupils of instructors who fear the move to St Helens would reduce their chances of passing.
