A PENSIONER has been conned out of £90 after falling victim to cold callers.
Trading Standards officers are warning residents to be on their guard after a 92-year-old Appleton woman was approached by two men offering to carry out work in her garden amounting to £320 on Friday.
After a small amount of work and an initial payment of £90 in cash, they arranged to return to collect the balance.
The pensioner's carer notified the police and Trading Standards after realising the 92-year-old was not given a receipt or informed of her right to a seven day cooling off period.
Police recently warned there is a link between cold callers and distraction burglaries and urged elderly people not to allow these callers to carry out work in their homes.
Trading Standards are also advising residents to look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours and to report any suspicious callers to the police immediately on 0845 4580000.
A spokesman said: "If you are looking after a vulnerable friend or relative please advise them not to contract with cold callers."
