STAFF from a Latchford school took on a gruelling challenge after a long-standing colleague was diagnosed with cancer.

Lawrence Sherrington, a member of the design and technology department at Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, was diagnosed with brain cancer last Christmas.

So staff members from the school decided to take on Mount Snowdon to raise funds for a charity of Lawrence’s choice – Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s leading cancer centres providing highly specialist cancer care to a population of 2.4m people across Cheshire, Merseyside and the surrounding areas.

Warrington Guardian:

The Cardinal Newman team, made up of site staff, teaching assistants, pastoral and admins staff and teachers, set off on their trek earlier this month.

They powered on through the record heatwave and made it back down within seven hours.

Lawrence’s colleagues originally set a fundraising target of £500, but they have surpassed this raising more than £1,100 so far.

Helen Hunt, head of art, said: “We are lucky to have an amazing team of staff at Cardinal Newman who really support one another.

“When Lawrence said he wanted to raise funds for the Clatterbridge Cancer charity staff couldn't do enough to help.

“It was a tough climb on such a hot day, but really worth it.

“Nothing was going to stop us!”

Charity fundraiser Antony Jones said: “On behalf of The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, I’d like to thank everyone who took on the challenge to scale Snowdon in the blistering heat in support of Lawrence, he’s obviously a much-loved colleague, and very special to all at the school.”
