YOUNGSTERS in Howley will soon reap the benefits of a huge cash windfall to develop play areas in the district.

Thanks to contributions made by property developers building in the area, £175,000 is available to spend on improving the play areas for young people.

Howley councillor Yvonne Fovargue has welcomed the move to inject cash into the area.

She said: "It is right that developers who gain planning permission make a contribution to the local area so I am pleased that this contribution will assist in providing new and modern play areas for Howley's young people.

"We all know that play is central to a child's development, but the current facilities in the area are old and do not meet with modern standards."

Clr Fovargue is urging the community to get involved in the process of choosing where the money should be spent.

"We have already had a successful meeting with Howley Residents Association and the views of youngsters have been obtained.

"We will be looking to consult with residents over the coming months to get their views on the type of play provision they would like to see in the area," she added.

Three areas have already been identified that are under Warrington Borough Council's control - Howley Park, land to the back of Percival Street and land behind Harbord Street.

The money could be used to improve one or all three of the sites, depending on public opinion.
