A WARNING has been issued after bogus callers targeted Newton residents.
Merseyside Police in St Helens are reinforcing the message if in doubt, keep them out', following a spate of burglaries involving people posing as officials, or using other excuses to gain access to people's homes.
Over the past few weeks, rogues have been asking to check victims' water or carry out free fencing repairs in the area.
Police are urging residents to contact the police if they think a bogus caller has deceived them. These crooks are convincing liars, so people are told not to feel ashamed or embarrassed about being misled.
Residents are advised to always ask to see identification and to always ensure that their back doors are locked when answering their front doors.
If the caller claims to be from the electricity, gas or water company, ask them to quote your customer reference number. A genuine caller from these utility companies would be able to do so.
Police can only catch bogus callers with information from the public.
If you are faced with a bogus caller, call 999. Make sure that you take vehicle registrations and a description of the caller. For non-emergencies, use 0151 709 6010.
Anyone who has information about this kind of burglary is urged to contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
