OFFICERS are patrolling anti-social behaviour hotspots across town this half term - targeting under age drinkers and people supplying booze to those under 18.

The police have started the campaign for two weeks and officers are targeting areas where gangs of youths congregate.

Officers will also use new powers under section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act - known as the Direction to Leave' power.

The purpose of this new power is to minimise the likelihood of alcohol-related crime or disorder taking place.

Sgt Neil Drum, operation co-ordinator, said: "Part of our day-to-day work as officers is to pro-actively target hot spots to deal with any incidents of disorder and to reassure the public.

"Officers will take positive action and confiscate alcohol from anyone caught drinking under age and act on any intelligence received about those supplying alcohol to youths under age.

"When we stop an under age drinker we will gather information regarding their ability to access alcohol locally and make follow-up inquiries with any licensed premises identified.

"Similarly, if we discover alcohol has been obtained via parents we will visit home addresses to speak to those involved.

"We hope this sends out a strong message that anyone responsible for supplying alcohol for anyone under age can face prosecution and fines."
