ATTACKS on firefighters in Warrington have fallen over the past year, according to a report from the Fire Brigades Union.
In 2006/07 there were seven instances of physical and verbal abuse against firefighters in the town.
Nationally, attacks on firefighters are increasing with some crews reporting being hit with bricks, bottles and even petrol bombed as well as being attacked with lumps of wood and knives.
Action taken by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service to prevent such despicable attacks include installing CCTV cameras on engines and working with the police and other agencies to ensure appropriate evidence is obtained.
"Any attacks on our crews not only risks the lives of our firefighters, they also threaten the safety of the community they are trying to protect," said Fire Authority chairman Clr Tony Hooton.
"We put a lot of effort into working with young people so they understand the life-saving role service our staff provide as well as taking practical action to deter attacks and limit the risks to our firefighters."
Incidents recorded across Cheshire, including verbal abuse as well as when stones or other missiles have been thrown at vehicles of crews, fell from 36 in 2005/06 to 29 in 2006/07.
The service says it is on target for a further drop in 2007/08.
