Secretary Ade Green provides this update on happenings within the Warrington Anglers' Association and the catches on their waters...

KEN Hewitt managed to land a few specimens when he chose the River Mersey to wet a line this week, deciding on the Kingsway stretch.

Using a seven-metre whip and red maggots in a six-foot deep swim, Ken put together about 30 fish, all perch apart from one roach.

Three perch were around the 2lb mark, while another four were around 1lb.

He also tried to tempt a perch that was lurking in the depths that he estimated was 4-5lbs but unfortunately his double maggot did not entice the stripey.

Tim Poulter has been busy visiting three of our fisheries.

First on the cards was Statham where 20 roach were obliging and, as usual, where the fish are getting caught so the pike turn up for an easy meal. This is when Tim connected with a toothy predator that intercepted a roach destined for the landing net.

Next on the list was our small pools in the Wigan area, starting with Mowpin which is a small picturesque pool that’s full of rudd. Tim, having caught rudd and a nice carp, decided on a short move to D pool where he helped himself to a nice chub.

Next he tackled one of my favourites, the River Dee at Shocklach. Although Tim reports the river being very low, he still managed to catch some small chublets and a nice grayling.

Dave Tomkinson was back on Grey Mist this week, again fishing for tench. He set the bar even higher when the scales read 9lbs 6ozs. This was backed up with an 8lb male and a 7lb male.

Antony Rough visited the Dee at Worthenbury where float fishing with maggots and corn produced lots of chub, a few brown trout and two grayling. This week`s disabled and over 60s match on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge saw Al Faulkner take the honours from an end peg by the marina mouth. Al caught skimmers, roach and perch for a weight of 7lbs 8drs, just over a pound clear of Chris Wray who snared a perch of 1.5lbs in his catch. Both anglers fished pole at 12.5 metres with maggot and pinkie hook baits.

This week`s Mersey match was held on Victoria Park where some pegs were expected to struggle in the low water conditions.

Top rod and veteran international Harry Billing drew well for his first match on the river this year when he pulled favoured peg eight from the bag. Five hours later and 14lbs 8osz of mainly silver bream were placed on the scales to give him his first Mersey win – one of many I`m sure.

Ray Boden, fishing end peg 34 – another fancied peg – took second spot with a mixed bag of fish on pole with a bonus bream on feeder. Jimmy Byrne and Neil Davies made up the last two places from pegs 14 and 16.

Please note carp are starting to spawn on some lakes. Do not cast to these fish and do not cross or remove tape that is there to prevent you fishing or you will be dealt with by the management committee.
