A MEETING of residents has been held with a view to safeguarding a historic church described as the ‘iconic heart of the village’.
People living in Winwick attended a meeting of the Parochial Church Council to protect the Grade I-listed St Oswald’s Church.
The building has stood as a focal point in Winwick for hundreds of years and is a stunning show of architecture.
It is also home to community groups who use its space, but issues over recent years have put a strain on church finances.
Providing an update on the meeting, council member Stuart Mann said: “The meeting saw one of the largest number of attendees for many years, and the council would like to pass on its gratitude to everyone who came along.
“Unfortunately, the meeting did lay bare the financial challenge our beautiful church faces.
“In short, and focusing on the most concerning issues, already stripped back outgoings are approximately £6,000, and income is averaging £2,500.
“The church electrics and boiler also need some urgent TLC, with any voluntary support being most welcome.
“Our ancient church is at real risk, but we have an amazing community and the council is hopeful that in being open about the challenges it faces, there is a chance we can come together to give what we can.”
If you would like to help, the official St Oswald’s website has been refreshed with details of how your everyday online shopping can support the church at no cost via the charity app easyfundraising.
New dates for open days are in the planning, as are other ideas around interactive tours and showcasing the history and story of St Oswald’s.
“There is a great deal to do but a lot more to come, and the council hopes this first step will be the right one to keep the iconic heart of our village safe for generations,” Stuart added.
