THE country will go to the polls next month in the local elections.

More than 4,000 councillors in 146 councils in England will be up for election on May 5.

Regional mayor and parish council elections will also take place.

But there will be no election in Warrington this year.

Why is there no election in Warrington next month?

The council has 58 councillors representing 22 wards in the borough.

Each councillor serves a four year term. All-out elections are held every four years for all seats in Warrington.

The last election was May last year (delayed from 2020 due to Covid).

Because of the Covid delay, those councillors will serve three and not four years.

So the next time you will vote in local council elections will be May 2024.

And every seat will be contested.

How did last year's election turn out?

Labour maintained overall control of the council, but it was the Conservatives who had the best of the poll.

They took seats from both Labour and the Liberal Democrats to become the official opposition at the Town Hall.

Warrington Guardian:

As it stands, Labour has 36 seats, the Conservatives 11 seats, Liberal Democrats 8 seats and there are three independents.

Could there be an election before 2024?

Those elections could be tied in with a General Election.

There is no date for when the next General Election will be, but it must be before January 23, 2025.

So it could well be 2024.

And if you live in Woolston, there is a vote this week.

There are two vacancies on Woolston Parish Council with a by-election set for April 7.

Max Czekalski will stand for Labour, Howard Klein and Rob Tynan for the Conservatives and Brian Meichen and Daniel Warren for the Liberal Democrats.
