SCHOOL OF THE YEAR WINNERS

JUDGES found it very difficult to choose the School of the Year winner, so they decided to have two.

Primary School of the Year was handed to Locking Stumps Community Primary School in Birchwood who received numerous nominations about the quality of teaching and care.

A parent told the Guardian how incredibly supportive the school had been after their sons’ father passed away at the start of this year. Not only did the head and staff help to deliver the devastating news in the most compassionate and sensitive way possible, but they have also been there every day since as the family try to come to terms with their loss.

The mum said: “I'll never forget their compassion in such a difficult time."

It was a double win on the evening for head teacher Jamie Vermiglio who told events host Elaine Willcox: “It made me quite emotional to be honest listening to that nomination.

“Like all schools, you go through a lot from day-to-day to week-to-week.

“It isn’t just teaching but it’s the care and compassion we show to families and that Locking Stumps relationships is at the forefront of everything for us. So to hear particularly that last nomination, it meant a lot. So thank you.”

The High School of the Year award was given to Birchwood Community High School.

Strong feedback from Birchwood parents in a recent survey impressed judges, with almost 100 per cent confirming their children were happy at the school, and staff praised for the ethics and values they promote.

One parent said: “There are many staff stars working there. Keep doing what you are doing.”
