POLICE are warning residents to keep their wits about them after a suspicious man entered a property using fake ID.
The incident happened at an address on Launceston Drive in Penketh yesterday, Wednesday, with the suspect claiming to be from the gas board.
Believing him to be genuine, the homeowner allowed him entry to check the gas meter after checking his ID.
Following the incident, the homeowner contacted their gas supplier which confirmed that no representative had been sent to that address.
Thankfully, no items were stolen and no threats were made, however police are warning residents to be wary.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “At 11.45am on Wednesday, February 23, police were called to reports that a suspicious man had attended an address on Launceston Drive, Penketh.
“The caller reported that earlier that day an unknown man, claiming to be from the gas board, had attended the address and been let into the property to read the gas meter.
“Following the incident, the homeowner contacted their gas supplier who stated that they had not sent anyone to the address.
“No Items were stolen and no threats were made.”

The force’s Penketh and Cuerdley Police team added: “A bogus caller has gained entry into a local resident’s house, posing as a gas supply representative wanting to read the gas meter.
“This person worn ID, but the ID was fake.
“If this happens to you, make the person wait outside of your house and call the company which they represent to confirm the ID.
“Once the ID is confirmed as genuine, you may let then enter your property.”
