TODAY marks a full 12 months since Warrington’s coronavirus vaccination programme kickstarted into life.

On December 15, 2020, the very first Pfizer jabs arrived at Orford Jubilee Hub, ready to offer protection to the those deemed most ‘at risk’ in the town.

Receiving the first vaccine was then 98-year-old Phillip Leech, who caused everyone in the room to break out in applause once the injection process was complete.

Now, a whole year later, the former GP from Walton spoke to the Warrington Guardian to reflect on what vaccine has enabled him to do.

“I felt that it was a privilege to be the first resident to receive the vaccine and it was the right thing to do. I was grateful to be given it,” he said.

“It enabled me to see my daughter and family without the restrictions being in place.

“My sons have visited when they were able to, and this could be done with less risk to myself and their families.

“At 99 years of age, nothing really has changed as I am just living out my life.

“I have support from my family and am still able to visit them for lunch, now that everyone has been vaccinated and there is less risk.”

After receiving his first dose, Dr Leech described his experience as painless and similar to any other injection.

He also called for all residents to follow his lead and receive the vaccine to ensure maximum protection against the virus.

“I think everyone should be getting the vaccine – the more people the better so we can build up a greater overall immunity,” he explained.

“I would encourage everyone to get it. An awful lot of effort has gone into making it and making sure it is safe.

“You have to trust the scientists.”

When asked a year on whether he had a message to any residents who may be hesitant about getting a jab or the booster, he again urged them to accept the vaccine offer.

“I had the booster as soon as it was possible. I had no doubts about getting it and felt it was absolutely necessary and the right thing to do,” he said.

“I feel getting fully vaccinated is the right thing to do.

“It is absolutely necessary and the best that everyone can do for all involved to reduce the risk of developing Covid and reduce the risk of it spreading.”

Dr Leech is planning on spending Christmas with his daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.
