WARRINGTON Wolves head coach Daryl Powell has spoken of his pack options being enhanced by the signing of Billy Magoulias.
Among other things, this suggests the capture of Magoulias will free up more of his squad to play in the front row rather than the back row – though there will be plenty of flexibility.
The 24-year-old has joined The Wire on a one-year contract, with a further year's option, from Australian NRL outfit Cronulla Sharks.
Sydney-born Magoulias, a Greek international, is a ball player whose best work is done at loose-forward, though he can also play in the second row and at prop.
Powell loves a ball-player in his pack – he spent time doing that at number 13 himself as a player – and it is a role Grant Millington held at the new Wire boss' previous club Castleford Tigers.
Having this type of player available will be essential to Powell's endeavours in bringing a more entertaining brand of football to The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The use of a third prop at loose-forward, a fashion that came to Super League from the NRL, could still happen when considered needed in games but Magoulias' selection there will potentially mean more time in the front row for players who have spent some time there in the past, such as Joe Philbin, Jack Hughes and Jason Clark.
The latter is expected to be at The Wire next season, though the club have not confirmed this so far.
A lot of fans have been calling for more prop options, but looking at the squad as a whole and who could be asked to play where, Powell currently has 11 options – though one of the newcomers James Harrison is sidelined until at least May following an ACL injury with previous club Featherstone Rovers.
It is actually in the three-quarters where The Wire look as though they need more blood, especially with new arrival Greg Minikin not available until June, Nathan Roebuck's contract situation unclear and Keanan Brand having converted to full-back while on loan at Leigh Centurions this year.
And there is currently speculation surrounding Josh Charnley's future too.
Here are the likely options currently available to Powell across his squad, with club confirmation still awaited on the futures of Jason Clark, Roebuck and Cole Oakley.
